Chocolate is my go-to food when I’m sick, down or just need a little pick-me-up. However, chocolate is not always best on a weak stomach. I have found that I just can’t tolerate it on a bad day. What’s a girl to do?! Ginger is a great spice to help soothe an upset tummy and I find it a little relaxing. Turmeric is said to have anti-inflammatory properties so it is also one of my go-to spices. I’ve made Turmeric Milk (recipe soon!) and it’s one of my favorites. However, for this recipe, I added a great cocoa alternative: carob. Carob powder looks like cocoa powder but has an “earthier” taste. That doesn’t mean it tastes like dirt – it’s just a little bit of a richer taste. It’s naturally much sweeter and doesn’t have that bitter after-taste like cocoa. It is also AIP friendly to help those with weaker stomachs. Makes 1 serving
In a saucepan, combine milk, water, ginger, turmeric and carob. Heat until just boiling, stirring frequently to prevent scorching. Pour into a large mug and stir in honey.
*You can use all coconut milk if desired. I like adding a little coconut water as it provides natural electrolytes which can be good if you’ve had a rough spell.
*I have found a few varieties of granulated ginger crystals with honey. You can simple use granulated or ground ginger plus a little more honey. If you have the honey-ginger crystals, you may not need to add any extra honey after heating. Add honey to taste.
