Penny Pinching Party – Bananas

Okay friends – here’s my money saving tip for the week: buy overripe bananas on sale.

I’m not kidding – we buy about 3lbs of bananas every time we go to the store. If we go in between deliveries, we can get bananas for $0.39 per pound. I usually eat one per day but if they start to turn brown too fast, we don’t worry at all. If the bananas are already turning brown at the store, we still buy them. You can use them in baked goods as egg or oil replacements. Slightly brown bananas (peeled and frozen) also make the BEST and EASIEST Paleo ice cream. It is so easy, delicious and you can still add whatever extras you want.

All we do is let the bananas rest on the counter until they start to get brown spots. Once the banana is usually half covered in little brown specs, we peel it and put the banana whole in a freezer safe bag.

When we want ice cream, we take out one banana per person and put it in the YoNanas maker. You can also use a blender for the same effect. Not only does it help save money and reduce waste, but it is also much healthier for you than many of the other choices you’d find in the freezer section.

Here’s why we love the YoNanas maker: it is fairly cheap to purchase, easy to use and will blend just about anything. You can add nuts, chocolate chips, various fruits, etc and it perfectly blends the ingredients. I love that we can make such healthy, yet tasty desserts with it.
