Hot Carob Drink with Caramel Sauce

This is just like hot cocoa but made with carob powder instead. Carob powder is a great alternative to cocoa. It is caffeine free, vegan and comes in various forms. There is carob powder, carob chips, etc. I originally found it at Whole Foods and I asked the checker how it tasted and she replied “it tastes kind of earthy.” I was a little skeptical and was expecting it to taste like dirt but it was great! It is naturally sweet and cocoa like flavor but she was right, it is just a little different. I just substituted the carob powder for cocoa in a traditional recipe for hot cocoa. If you don’t have carob powder, just use cocoa but I encourage you to try it! This recipe makes 2 cups of cocoa.

1 ½ cup almond milk
½ cup coconut  milk
2 tbsp carob powder
1 Tbsp honey
2 marshmallows (bought or homemade)
2 tsp caramel sauce

  • In a saucepan, combine milks, carob and honey and whisk together. Bring mixture to boiling over medium heat.
  • Pour hot mixture into mugs. Top with a marshmallow and drizzle with caramel sauce.
